What is dyslexia?
Dyslexia is a language-learning disability that is neurological. Characteristics of which include difficulties with word recognition (fluency/accuracy), poor spelling and decoding abilities. Further consequences may include problems in reading comprehension and reduced reading experience, which leads to vocabulary problems.
How is dyslexia diagnosed?
When evaluating dyslexia, a variety of tests are administered to gather information about the student's skills, cognition, and areas of strength and weakness. Typically, an Educational Psychologist would provide a formal diagnosis.
What is Orton-Gillingham?
The Orton-Gillingham approach has been in use since the 1930s and was developed by neurologist Dr Samuel T. Orton and educator, psychologist Anna Gillingham. This theory combines multi-sensory techniques along with the structure of the English language. Multi-sensory education incorporates auditory, kinesthetic, tactile, and visual learning pathways. Items taught include phoneme/grapheme relationship, phonemic awareness, syllable types, affixes, roots, cutting patterns, non-phonetic sight words, and common spelling rules. This approach is endorsed by the International Dyslexia Association and is the most commonly used intervention for dyslexia.
Fine Motor Skills Group (Dysgraphia students):
This program works on fine motor skills and has been designed by an OT. We work on strengthening hands, fingers, core strength and posture, which all have a valuable role to play in handwriting and will ensure that their hands do not fatigue during writing. We also work on letter formation, spacing, size of letters and so much more!
Maths Group (Dyscalculia):
Dyscalculia is a learning difficulty with impairment in Mathematics. Some indicators include:
-
Not knowing which of the two numbers is larger.
-
Poor fluency in the identification of numbers
-
Difficulty with mental calculations
-
Problems with working memory
